Examples of Activities Permitted Under Engineer/Specialist in Humanities/International Services

This is an English translation of the examples of permitted activities under the Status of Residence “Engineer/Specialist in Humanities/International Services” made public by the Ministry of Justice on their website in March 2008 (and revised in March 2015). Note: This document has been updated with recent cases and is no longer accessible.

This will help you to have some idea about the necessary background and acceptable activities. I omitted the introduction part and the 1st paragraph. Numbering was added for ease of reference.

2. Typical examples

(1)         You graduated from a university in your home country, majoring in engineering, and worked for a game-making company doing online games development and support operations. After that, based on a contract with a legal entity in Japan that is in charge of a game business section in the group company, you are to be engaged in, among others, designing, comprehensive testing, and inspecting the system relating to the following online game development projects of the company, with a monthly salary of about 250,000 yen.

(2)         You graduated from a university in your home country, majoring in engineering, and worked for a software company. After that, based on a contract with a software company in Japan, you are to be engaged in computer-related services as a software engineer with a monthly salary of about 350,000 yen.

(3)         You graduated from a university in your home country, majoring in telecommunications engineering, and were employed by a Japanese telecommunications facility construction company’s local subsidiary company. After that, based on a contract with the parent company in Japan, you are to be engaged as a computer programmer in, among others, arranging specifications with customers and preparing specification sheets in connection with the software to be developed, with a monthly salary of about 240,000 yen.

(4)         You graduated from a university in your home country, majoring in mechanical engineering, and worked for an automobile maker doing product development, testing, and employee education. After that, based on a contract with a consulting and temporary staffing firm in Japan, you are to be dispatched to a foreign-affiliated automaker in Japan to work as a product manager in connection with technical development and the like, with a monthly salary of about 1,700,000 yen.

(5)         You graduated from a university in your home country, majoring in engineering and information processing, and were engaged in risk management work and system development within a research section for derivatives in a securities firm. After that, based on a contract with a foreign-affiliated securities firm in Japan, you are to be engaged in work such as preparing transaction reports and constructing profit-and-loss databases, with a monthly salary of about 830,000 yen.

(6)         After graduating from a university in Japan majoring in architectural engineering, based on a contract with a Japanese construction company, you are to be engaged in work such as basic research and applied research of construction technology and study of construction situations in and out of Japan, with a monthly salary of about 400,000 yen.

(7)         You completed your doctoral course at a graduate school in Japan, majoring in civil engineering, and worked for the production technology research institute at the university. After that, based on a contract with a civil engineering and construction consulting firm in Japan, you are to be engaged in research and development, analysis, and structural design in the fields of civil engineering and construction, with a monthly salary of about 300,000 yen.

(8)         You graduated from a university in your home country, majoring in electrodynamics and engineering, and worked for a transportation machinery and equipment manufacturing company. After that, based on a contract with an aircraft maintenance company in Japan, you are to be engaged in system analysis, technical support, and developing services in connection with CAD and CAE, with a monthly salary of about 300,000 yen.

(9)         After you complete your doctoral course at a graduate school in Japan majoring in electronics and informatics, based on a contract with a telecommunications business company in Japan, you are to be engaged in work relating to an information security project in the research institute in the company, with a monthly salary of about 250,000 yen.

(10)       After graduating from university in your home country, based on a contract with a language school in Japan, you are to be engaged in work as a language instructor, with a monthly salary of about 250,000 yen.

(11)        You completed a master’s course at a graduate school in your home country, majoring in business administration, and worked for a shipping company in your home country for about four years doing chartering and operation of ocean liners. After that, based on a contract with a shipping company in Japan, you are to be engaged in work such as chartering and operation of ocean liners and employee education and training, with a monthly salary of about 1,000,000 yen.

(12)       After graduating from a university in your home country, majoring in accounting, based on a contract with a computer-related information processing firm in Japan, you are to be engaged in accounting work in connection with export and import business with companies in your home country at the overseas business headquarters in that firm, with a monthly salary of about 250,000 yen.

(13)       After completing a master’s course at a graduate school in Japan, majoring in international relations, based on a contract with an airline company in Japan, you are to be engaged in work such as air passenger services and negotiation and alliance management with incoming foreign airline companies making use of your language skills, with a monthly salary of about 200,000 yen.

(14)       You graduated from a university in your home country, majoring in business administration, and took jobs as a management consultant based on a contract with an IT-related company in Japan. You are to be engaged in business transaction consulting with IT-related companies in your home country, with a monthly salary of about 450,000 yen.

(15)       After graduating from a university in your home country, majoring in business administration, based on a contract with an import and sales company in Japan dealing in foods and sundries, you are to be engaged in interpreting and translation when doing business with your home country, with a monthly salary of about 300,000 yen.

(16)       After graduating from a university in your home country, majoring in economics and international relations, based on a contract with a car maker in Japan, you are to be engaged in work such as conducting surveys of markets, users, and car import trends, managing car sales and car supply and demand, and strengthening partnership with local sales dealers, with a monthly salary of about 200,000 yen.

(17)       After graduating from a university in Japan, majoring in business administration, based on a contract with an airline company in Japan, you are to be engaged in work such as emergency response and security activities as a cabin crew for an international flight, providing passengers with interpretation and guiding using your mother language, English and Japanese, and offering language instruction at employee training, with a monthly salary of about 250,000 yen.
